Is a Wooden Ring the right Fit for You?
A Six Mile Studio wooden ring is beautiful, warm, and easily customized to fit just your style, but we’re often asked “Will this ring work in my life?” Our goal is to match our customers with wooden rings that will stand up to their lifestyle and last for many years to come. Each of our wood types are selected because they are strong and can stand up to most daily lifestyles. Taking care of your finish and using your wax scratch protection also helps, but some tasks can cause issues with the finish, and over time, with the wood itself. Please look over our list of common lifestyle problems that can mean a wooden ring will require more care. If you do fall into one of these categories there is good news, each category has a solution if you still want to wear a wooden ring, and we will always work with you and your specific need to find a way to make wearing a wooden ring a possibility no matter your daily life. Do you use metal handled tools daily?
We have found that certain professions, such as car mechanics, or jobs where gripping metal handles with force is a daily necessity, can cause dents, scratches and cracking of the finish on our rings.
The solution: Take off your ring while working with these tools. While we can repair the finish on the rings, we can’t repair a deep dent. If you need a ring to wear while working with these tools a wooden ring may not be for you.
Do you use alcohol based hand sanitizers daily?
The alcohol based hand sanitizers can react badly with our acrylic finish causing cloudy spots in the ring, and leading to the finish wearing away faster than it normally would. The finish can be repaired and restored, however we find it is best to avoid this issue if possible.
The solution: Either remove your ring while using the sanitizer, or talk to us about styles that can be made and finished with wax rather than acrylic. You will need to apply the wax at home more frequently, but you can still wear a wooden ring. Some of our styles, like stone inlays, cannot be made with a purely wax finish.
Do you use harsh chemicals or household cleaners daily?
Harsh chemicals, or household cleaners that are made with harsh chemicals, can eat away at the acrylic finish on your ring, causing cloudy spots or creating cracking of the finish.
The solution: While the finish can be repaired it is best to avoid wearing your ring while using these chemicals, or cover your hands with gloves while working. If these options will not work for you, talk to us about styles that can be made and finished with wax rather than acrylic. You will need to apply the wax at home more frequently, but you can still wear a wooden ring. Some of our styles, like stone inlays, cannot be made with a purely wax finish.
Do you use work in a job that requires your hands to get dirty/wet on a daily basis?
We all get our hands dirty sometimes, and our rings are made to stand up to a regular day of hand washing, bathing or dish washing, however, some people may be getting their hands wet or dirty a little more often causing their acrylic finish to wear away much sooner.
The solution: Use the wax buffing stick you will receive with your ring more frequently, once a day if your hands are constantly being submerged in water. The wax will act as an extra coat of protection against water, wearing away a little bit each time. You may also need to plan on sending your ring in for more frequent refinishings.
Do you go rock climbing or participate in extreme sports that are rough on your hands?
If you’re the adventurous type it’s unlikely that you’re spending your weekends pampering your hands (although sometimes some pampering is great!), and our rings are meant to live your life with you, but some extreme sports are just a little bit too extreme for wood. Scaling cliffs with your bare hands can cause scratches and gouges in your wooden ring that are hard to repair.
The solution: The best solution to avoid scratches, dents and other accidents with your wooden ring would be to remove it while participating in rough sports. While our rings are built to be strong, a sharp edged rock can cause a gouge that can’t be repaired.
